Then and Now… Women in Ministry
Let's have a look back at some Then and Now moments from Square One's English ministries.
Then (1960s & 70s) From 1968 to 1978, Gospel Light produced a radio program called Words for Women. The original speaker, Louise Willms, is shown (left) with Agnes Schmidt who replaced her in 1971. Agnes remembers hearing from men who enjoyed the program, too. Especially farmers who listened to whatever came on the radio while they were out working in their fields.
Now (2017) Kaylyn Holmes (Beautiful Unique Girl), Irene Marsch (Health Talks with Nurse Irene, Low German) and Marina Pinto (Hope for Today’s Woman, Spanish) carry on the tradition begun by Louise and Agnes with programs geared for women.
Then (1950s) From 1947 to 1954, the weekly Gospel Light Hour was recorded live. The musicians and speakers all crowded into one recording booth. When the red light went on, whatever happened in the booth is what listeners heard on their radios. Shown, the Gospel Light Hour Choir, circa 1950. Conducted by Cornie Balzer (center, with bowtie) and accompanied by Margaret Schulz (at piano).
Now (2019) Kaylyn Holmes, host of the Beautiful Unique Girl (BUgirl) YouTube videos and Live Events, performs at a live “I AM…” event at a church in Manitoba.
